Global Challenges in Livestock Systems
Livestock plays a vital role in global food security and rural livelihoods, but it faces multiple challenges. Despite producing enough food to feed the world, 30% of it is wasted, while 733 million people still go hungry. The livestock sector contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and places considerable pressure on natural resources like land and water. These challenges are further exacerbated by climate change, which disrupts productivity and increases vulnerabilities, particularly in rural communities.
The Path to Sustainable Livestock Systems
Transforming livestock systems is essential to address these interconnected issues. Sustainable practices, as outlined by the FAO, balance productivity with ecosystem conservation by promoting the efficient use of natural resources and reducing environmental impacts. Beyond addressing climate change, these practices are key to ensuring the sector’s resilience and ability to support livelihoods over the long term.
Latin America’s Strategic Role
Latin America and the Caribbean produce 28% of the world’s livestock and sustain 64% of the region’s rural population. However, the region also faces significant challenges, including social inequalities and environmental degradation.
In this context, the First Regional Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation , held in Uruguay in November 2024, marked a critical milestone. This event, co-organized by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries (MGAP), and National Meat Institute of Uruguay (INAC), brought together representatives from 33 countries to explore innovative and sustainable solutions. The discussions reinforced the region’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while addressing the critical challenges facing the sector.

A Global Call to Action
Transforming livestock systems is not just an environmental imperative; it is an opportunity to create a more equitable and sustainable future. Achieving this requires collaboration between governments, private sector stakeholders, and local communities. With Latin America taking a leadership role in this conversation, the time to act is now.
It is crucial to prioritize production models that make livestock systems more efficient, resilient, and sustainable.
How can we move forward together to create a better future? This is the moment to unite efforts and drive the transformation forward.
